Day 35 Dale to Pembroke Dock (21.4 miles, cumulative 580.3)

I awoke to the unfamiliar sound of heavy rain and the previous night's forecast had confirmed that this would last until mid afternoon. However, when I left my highly recommended B&B, with my clean clothes now nestled inside my rucksack, the rain had miraculously stopped.

The route soon reached a field of crops, with a very narrow footpath in between the field edge and the crops. The overnight rain had soaked the crops, so I too became very wet, very quickly, from my chest downwards. The next overgrown path only compounded the situation, with my feet becoming sodden.

Then, on the 35th day and after 565 miles, it finally rained on me! Not the sort of rain that demanded waterproofs, more of an intermittent drizzle which lasted for 45 minutes. Then it stopped. So the waterproofs remain unused.

I caught up with Steve, the walker I'd met yesterday, so we spent the afternoon walking past industrial scenery around Milford Haven. The sun reappeared, our clothes (but not our wet feet!) dried out, and the scenery became less industrial. Eventually we crossed the Cleddau bridge to Pembroke Dock, where I headed to my accommodation. I felt immense guilt as Steve continued with his loaded rucksack for another couple of miles to his campsite and a dehydrated meal, while I was heading for a hot shower, a cooked meal, and a comfortable bed. But, as Steve reminded me, it was his own choice to undertake his challenge in this way and he was only doing it for a few days, whereas I was walking for two months. The guilt remained.
